The origins of the Sciacca carnival go back to the first years of the twentieth century.

Sciacca is fully and totally involved by its carnival. The preparations begin many months before the real date of the festivity. It begins by building the allegorical carts.

Some builders that have been handing down the manufacture of the papier machè for a hundred years make them. The festivity begins on the last Thursday in Carnival with the consignation of the keys of the town to the king of the carnival: “Peppi Nappa”. The height of the kermes is the parade of the allegorical carts, which begins on Saturday

and continues until Tuesday. While passing through the streets of the town the carts are followed by some songs and music different from year to year. The groups all dressed-up with their choreographies incite the sharers to dance. The parade lasts all night and culminates acting the satirical script in the chief square of the town. Everything ends on the night of the Shrove Tuesday with the burning of “Peppi Nappa” cart. The whistles and gavels are thrown in the pyre and the exhilaration of those days burn with its king.
